Two-bedroomed self-catering cottage on an ecological family smallholding in beautiful natural surroundings.
Quinta do Boiço is an eight-hectare organic smallholding situated in a quiet wooded valley, with views across to mountain ranges – the Serra da Estrela to the East, the Serra do Caramulo to the North.
Guido (English), Mariluz (Italian) and Iris moved here in spring of 2005, when Iris was just three months old, with a view to living sustainably in beautiful natural surroundings. Since then we have renovated the buildings, established a productive garden and had baby Ruby in February 2009.
The quinta is mainly mixed woodland, predominantly pines, oaks, cork oaks, chestnuts and strawberry trees. There are a number of terraces on which we grow a variety of vegetables and have many fruit trees in addition to the olives and vines typical in the region. We have a donkey, six goats, two sheep, several hens, a small friendly dog and a cat. Our approach to husbanding the land and animals is a mix of conventional organic and permacultural.
There is solar electricity, spring water and wood-burning stoves for heating in winter. A large water tank fed by a spring provides a natural bathing place.
Casa do Poente is a recently converted traditional granite barn with views across the valley. It has two bedrooms, (one double, one twin), a bathroom with shower, basin, toilet and bidet, a living room with fitted kitchen and an outdoor patio. There's a gas-fired boiler for hot water, a gas cooker and an electric fridge.
For laundry, there's a washing machine in the main farmhouse. Produce from the quinta is available to guests: fresh vegetables and fruit, goats’ or sheep’s milk and cheese, fruit juice, wine, honey, jams and chutneys. Occasional meals can be provided by arrangement; Mariluz specializes in Italian and Indian cooking. We can also offer fresh bread and cakes.
The quinta is close to Tábua in the Beiras, amongst the forested hills of the Dão region about 50 km east of Coimbra along the river Mondego. There is an abundance of wonderful wildlife. It is good walking and cycling country and there are many river beaches for swimming. Horse-riding is also possible locally. The Serra da Estrela and the Serra de Açor are within easy reach, as is the ancient forest of Buçaco. Guests are welcome to join in with some of our farming activities if they wish, for example fruit harvesting, wine-making, goat-herding or cheese-making. We are happy to share our experience of alternative ecological living.

Prices include gas, electricity and firewood and a welcome basket of home produce. We will arrange transport to and from local stations for guests travelling by public transport.

Shorter stays (minimum three days): 55 euros/night (45 euros low season)
Discounts available for longer stays (three weeks or longer).
