A Casa Figo is a charming converted barn comprising of two double bedrooms, a shower room and an open plan well equipped kitchen/diner overlooking the lounge. The cottage is splendid by itself but travelling beyond the French doors, past the private swimming pool and onto the sun terrace there is a real treat to behold of stupendous views and magnificent scenery in every direction.
For some guests it is so easy to drift into a calming dimension, within our serene environment, and chill out by the pool away from the humdrum of modern life. Chattering stream water, harmonious birdsong and the tinkering of the goats’ bells in the valley below soothe and massage any negative thoughts into the background.
For the zestful walker, artist, photographer or wildlife enthusiast there are numerous trails from the front door of A Casa Figo for explorations into the solitary surrounding hills and forests of eucalyptus, pine and chestnut. For the observant there could be serendipitous sightings of the shy wild animals such as; wild boar; foxes; badgers; martens; bats; mongoose; deer; feral cats and civets. Throughout the seasons of the year there are numerous encounters with the fantastic arrays of butterflies, reptiles, weird insects (praying mantis; centipedes; etc), around 200 species of birds (bee-eaters; vultures; owls; eagles; etc), colourful amphibians (salamanders; frogs; toads; etc) and an ever changing conveyor belt of wild flowers, fungi and carnivorous plants. Exciting news from a ‘neighbour’ on the Ribeira de Arrronches, about a mile away, who has recently watched two playful otters cavorting in his garden.
Even though our enclave is an idyllic patch of tranquil peacefulness, just a short distance away (15km) is the bustling town of Portalegre where there can be found 5 supermarkets and other outlets for a touch of retail therapy. In Portalegre central there is a cinema, cathedral and parks, along with a multitude of bars and restaurants to suit most palates. The nearest restaurants to us are about 15 minutes drive away in either direction of the valley, two close to Salao Frio and another in Alegrete.
If an excursion in the car is sought, there are castellated villages and towns (Marvao, Castelo de Vide and Alegrete) close by. Again, there are fantastic walks around all of these regions full of history and natural beauty.
To experience two cultures in a single day, pop seamlessly over the border (about 15 minutes) into the contrasting Spain.
Vegetarian meals are available some evenings.
