About this area:
The well-preserved 11th century castle of Penela has a 16th century castle within its walls.
Superb views of Penela and surrounding hills and mountains can be enjoyed from here. The quaint town has shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants and on Thursdays a market. Facilities also include an indoor swimming pool and a cinema which shows current films in English.
Enjoy peace and tranquility whilst exploring the countryside. High in the hills above Penela, at Loucinha is a lake set out as a natural swimming pool, with picnic and barbeque facilities and a restaurant.
Close by Penela, at Rabacal, is a well presented Roman villa with dedicated museum.
Approximately 15 minutes by car, at Coinimbriga, is a huge and extensively excavated Roman city. Recognised as a world heritage site, with some of the finest mosaics discovered.
Coimbra, Portugal's third largest city, is about 30 minutes easy drive away. Among its many historical treasures is Europes oldest university, dating back to medieval time, with a spectacular Baroque library. Enjoy lunch alongside the River Mondego in between sight-seeing and shopping.
Other "must see" places reached in about an hour by car include Batalha where the stunning Gothic monastery is often said to be the most beautiful building in Portugal.
Tomar, has a fabulous castle housing the incredible Convento de Cristo, ancient headquarters of the Knights Templar. Aveiro is known as Portugal's Venice. Bucaco Palace Hotel, formerly a kings hunting lodge, sits in the centre of a national forest. Many magical walks lead to countless man-made and natural wonders. See also where Wellington commanded his troops, and slept, during the pivotal battle of Bucaco. This is not to be missed by devotees of the Peninsular Wars.
