The Alentejo region is commonly known as the ‘bread basket’ of Portugal. It is sparsely populated, very picturesque, rural, peaceful, safe and easy to travel around in - making it the ideal region to explore and have fun.
We welcome you to 'Herdade do Gizo' in the heart of the Alentejo.

Your visit.....

Day 1 starts with your arrival at Lisbon Airport and the collection of your pre-booked, 5 door ‘Hertz’ or ‘EuropCar’ car with its on-board ’SatNav.’ (Herdade do Gizo address details will be provided to type into the Sat Nav system )

You will then make your own way south into the Alentejo region, stopping as and when you want in any of the traditional, interesting towns and villages along the way. Evora is a delightful and typical Alentejo town to visit - it’s located about halfway between the airport and the resort.

Upon arrival at Herdade do Gizo, please follow the road through the main entrance up to the Reception to check-in. You’ll then be given your keys and shown to your private, contemporary styled villa.

We want you to feel free to enjoy yourselves. We have lots of ‘all inclusive’ activities to make the most of your visit to Herdade do Gizo.

Riding Facilities:
We have over 16 horses that permanently live on our ranch, and stables that can house up to 10 horses at any one time. Some of our horses live as a wild herd out in the fields –you may often catch glimpses of them hiding in the shade under a tree on your trips around the resort! The rest of our horses are what we use for riding or for breeding and are housed either in the stables or in the fields close by the stables.

All of our horses are either full Lustanian but some have been crossed with Arabian and English racehorses. However, they all have the behavioural characteristics of the Lusitanian breed and are good-mannered, well-behaved and a pleasure to ride. They are all between 1.5 – 1.6 metres high.

For beginners, we have a pony called Dourada who is very gentle and fantastic for those new to riding to learn on. She is used to being taught with children and is getting on a little so there is no chance of her bolting off into the distance!

Our resort manager Christina, although responsible for the general running of the resort, will normally be found either in the stables or out riding the horses. She has been here for many years so she knows the animals very well and you can see that she understands them. She has a wealth of experience training both horses and people and will normally be the person who carries out the lessons or accompanied rides as her English is excellent. She will also give riders a short assessment to check your capabilities if you wish to take the horse out on an unaccompanied ride.

Please be aware that we can only accommodate riding inside our resort and there are no trails outside that are safe to follow, however we have over 114 hectares of land so you shouldn’t feel restricted!

Due to the summers being so hot in the Alentejo region, we have to restrict the times of the riding to protect the horses. In the summer, you can ride from 9 – 11am and 5 – 7pm. In the winter depending on bookings, you can ride all day from 9am – 6pm. We do ask that you book your riding in advance as we have a limit on the number of lessons / accompanied rides that we can accommodate in one day.

Tack used: We have stock of both English and Portuguese saddles.
